Privacy Statement [In the Zone kits for schools]

Wellcome is responsible for the schools section of www.getinthezone.org.uk. This Privacy statement tells you how Wellcome will collect, store and use any information you provide to us when you participate in the Live Data Zone section of the In the Zone website. The Live Data Zone area of the In the Zone Website allows teachers and students to upload and compare the results of their experiments with other students across the UK.

Wellcome will collect, store and use any information you provide to us in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

1) What information will you collect about me?

We will only collect the following information from you: your school's email address and postcode, student age (years and months), school year, gender, height or sitting height (metres), student lung volume/vital capacity/peak flow/strength-endurance data/heart rate and blood pressure at rest and heart rate following exercise (from experiments), the number of minutes of exercise carried out by the student per week/sports that they do/ how fit they think they are in relation to class and (at the student's option) whether they are asthmatic or not.

Where you have signed up to receive the In the Zone e newsletter your information will be used to send you the newsletter containing information and updates about the Wellcome Trust and the In the Zone project.

2) Will you share my personal information with anyone else?

We will keep your information confidential except where disclosure is required or permitted by law (for example to law enforcement agencies) .

We have engaged certain third parties to help us provide the In the Zone project and we will share your information with these third parties for the purposes of the project.

The third parties include:

  • Guardian Professional
  • Pearson Education
  • GHK

As part of the project, we may share this information with selected third parties for scientific research purposes. This information will be anonymised. This means that the information we collect from you cannot be used to identify you.

3) How long will personal information be kept?

Wellcome will hold your personal information on the website for the duration of the In the Zone project.

However, anonymised data may be kept indefinitely for scientific research purposes.

4) How do we protect your information?

We use organisational and technical measures to ensure that your personal information is secure and protected from loss, misuse and unauthorised access or alteration.

5)  What other information do we collect?

a) IP Addresses

When you visit the In the Zone website our web server automatically records your IP address. This IP address is not linked to any of your personal information.

We use IP addresses to help us administer the site and to collect demographic information for aggregation purposes. We may also gather other non-personal information (information that cannot identify you), such as the type of internet browser you use, which helps us provide you with a more effective service.

b) Cookies

When you visit the In the Zone website, your computer will automatically be issued with a cookie. This allows us to remember your activities on our website and saves you from re-entering your details each time you visit the site.

You can block or erase cookies from your device if you want to (your browser's help screen or manual should tell you how to do this), but certain parts of the site are reliant on the use of cookies to operate correctly and may not work correctly if you set your browser not to accept cookies.

6) What are my rights?

You have the right to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you (for which we may charge a small fee) and to have any inaccuracies in your information corrected.

Get In the Zone with Brazil 2014 and the Commonwealth Games!

After the huge success of London 2012 the sporting craze continues this summer with Brazil 2014 and, straight after the World Cup, we'll be hosting the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

What a great opportunity to get ahead of the games and use your In the Zone kit to bring some of the excitement of these major sporting events into your classroom. You can use the kit to help your pupils discover the science behind the performance of elite footballers like Wayne Rooney, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and what happens in the bodies of top athletes such as Usain Bolt and Mo Farrar when they push themselves to the limit in their quest for gold.
